Abstract

The approach to Urban Geography, specifically, the metropolitan approach within Geography classes is a way of articulating local, regional and global scales. This is achieved through the conceptualization of metropolis, metropolitan region and the understanding of the vertical and horizontal relations established between cities through the urban network. Thus, the objective is to understand through a critical view of the approach and emphasis attributed to the metropolitan approach in the textbooks of Geography for High School. The methodology for selection of the collections analyzed consisted in quantifying the data of drawing and acquisition value of the books acquired by the Ministry of Education, selecting the most relevant and those with less expression of acquisition. In order to analyze the textbooks, the concepts related to the metropolitan approach were identified and analyzed for their contextualization and relevance in the books. It is considered that there is a set of factors that must be integrated to synthesize the analyses of geographic contents of the textbooks, which consists not only in textual attributes but also in the consideration of the pluralism of the realities existing in the Brazilian educational scenario.
