Abstract

This paper analyses the importance of fieldwork for higher education geography by emphasizing agrarian geography themes. This text is structured upon the systematization – planning, execution and evaluation – on a fieldwork developed by a group of the Interdisciplinary Rural Education Undergraduate Course: Social Sciences and Humanities’ students, at the Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul, Paraná, Brazil, in the first term of 2019. Peasantry, cooperativism and agroecology compose the Geography II syllabus, a course of the aforementioned major of study. This article’s methodology consists of field observation and the analysis of students’ reports. The activity allowed us to reaffirm the importance of fieldwork for geography teaching, given that it permitted to understand, in praxis, how cooperativism and agroecology establish themselves as fundamental strategies to peasantry territorialisation. In addition, conversations among the diverse participants and visits to the spaces of production and manufacture of agricultural products permitted us to visualize the contradictions placed in Brazilian countryside areas, particularly those which involve rural organizations. In those terms, fieldwork constitutes itself as the ultimate methodologic tool that allows a critical and transformative comprehension on geographic space.
