Abstract

Who are the authors of the Geography textbooks distributed in Brazilian public schools from 2005 to 2022? What are your backgrounds? Where did they study and work professionally? The objective of this research was to outline the profile of these professionals in order to launch some reflections on the National Textbook Program (PNLD). To achieve this goal, Lattes curriculum were accessed, as well as internet sites and direct contacts with thirty authors via e-mail. To discuss the function of authority, we used Foucault, Maingueneau and Barthes. For textbook studies, we use foreign and national references. As a result of the research, we concluded that the majority of the authors are men (63%), with initial formation in Geography (86%), passing through the University of São Paulo (60%), being 37% teachers in private schools and only 6% of the public basic education network. We understand, however, that the production of a textbook is collective, in which, in addition to the authors, different social actors (researchers, editors, teachers, students, parents, legislators etc.) act, the language itself and the cultural scope that defines it.
