Abstract

In this article we present and discuss some representations elaborated by Terena students in the context of Geography teaching in indigenous schools of Nioaque/MS. By means of drawings, we observe that orality is one of the factors responsible for maintaining the memory of the territorial formation of the villages of Nioaque and it exerts a fundamental role in the teaching/learning process of the indigenous students. We have identified, through the drawings referring to the territory, that these students portray a feeling of belonging, attachment and zeal, because it is there they practice agriculture that is the main method of subsistence of most Terena families. We also noticed marked changes in the work relationships and territoriality in the Terena community resulting from the re-signification of some elements and the imposition of others.
