Abstract

Brazil, a country of continental extension and great cultural, social, economic and environmental diversity, is marked by prejudices such as xenophobia, racism, homophobia and machismo. It is perceived that there are school contexts that result in unequal social and affective relationships between students, due to their origin and family. The present pedagogical practice seeks to build joint notions on socio-spatial formation and the appreciation of differences. In order to soften and propose a set of reflections on family histories, based on the framework of geographic language, it was thought an activity, called Maps of Geographical Origins, in which students should discover the origins of their families, with awareness of the deconstruction of prejudices and appreciation of socio-spatial differences. A conversation wheel was also held to expose and discuss the proposed objectives. The pedagogical practice presented satisfactory results for the students of themes related to respect for diversities, local and regional cultures. It also corroborated the hypothesis initially formulated that the geographical origins of children and their families were regionally diverse. Therefore, the activity helped in the development of critical thinking of students in relation to common sense, improving their self-esteem because many of them felt excluded and inferior due to their origin.
