Abstract

This article aims to problematize distensions about the meanings and purposes of public education from the debate about the interactions between the paradigms of equality and diversity. It presents bases and implications of the operationalization of these paradigms in the educational field, highlighting contradictions and disputes in the conformation of the curriculum that results from this interaction. As a strategy for dialogue between these paradigms, we suggest the debate around the Code Theory and the idea of contexts management of Basil Bernstein, as intellectual devices to understanding the different demands and tensions around public education. It also seeks to reflect on how specialized disciplinary discourses are recontextualized and related to different and unequal learning contexts. Finally, it’s stands out the role of Bernstein's proposals in promoting a fairer school, that is, committed to the recognition and appreciation of differences and to the more equal access to the different forms of knowledge that make up school curriculum.
